Anyone who knows me, knows my newest love is verse. My writing instructor recommended I read verse to study line breaks and use of "white space," and now I can't get enough. One of my favorite verse novels is Lisa Schroeder's I HEART YOU, YOU HAUNT ME. I cried, I skipped ahead because the suspense drove me mad, then went back to enjoy each word. I can't wait to read FAR FROM YOU.

Ah, you're so sweet!
ReplyDeleteThank you - you are entered!!
I, too, liked this exercise.
ReplyDeleteWith the few words, I am brought immediately into this person's world.
Nicely done.
I couldn't help but leave my interpretation:
I sit, alone.
My newspaper is a curtain,
between us,
like the unfilled
space
in the middle of our bed.
Neither of us ever brave
enough to enter.
A spoon clinks against
your coffee cup.
Your knee brushes mine
and quickly pulls away.
I stare
at the obituaries.
Now, I hear
the rustle
of the newspaper,
as I turn the page.
No clinking,
no throat clearing.
I sip my lukewarm
tea and swallow
the words
on my tongue.
I put down the paper,
and see only your empty
cup, and a five-dollar
bill.
Betsy, WOW that's wonderful. Loved it. And thanks for coming by and saying hello.
